U2 played to a crowd of more than 50,000 at a soccer stadium Sunday night in Lisbon, Portugal which was their final European date on the band's "Vertigo" tour. Keane were set to open for them but were forced to pull out due to illness. Lead singer, Tom Chaplin, was ordered to be on bedrest for a full week by his doctor after he fell ill due to a serious throat infection. According to Keane's official website, the band were really disappointed to miss the gig since Lisbon is "one of their favorite places on earth." The site goes on to say that working with U2 was like a dream come true for this young band which may have made missing this particular show that much worse since the president of Portugal, Jorge Sampaio, presented the members of U2 with Portugal's Order of Liberty, one of the country's highest honors, in recognition of their work for humanitarian causes over the past 25 years. Lesser known band, Kaiser Chiefs filled in for Keane at the concert.
